For our Metrocraft Series, we use a public domain version of Minecraft called Minetest.
It is nearly identical to Minecraft, but is far more realistic, which works better for our civics content and lessons in classes. When we first began Metrocraft classes, we did use the Minecraft platform, but quickly found that a “creative mode” program like Minetest was far superior for a class that is focused on real-world civics.
Minetest does not include many of the unrealistic challenges that Minecraft includes, such as mobs, invisibility, withers, potions and the like. Additionally, it is easier to modify (or “mod”) our Minetest world to our classes specific needs and gives us far grater control of the world than if we used Minecraft. Unfortunately, in order to use Minecraft, every family would have to install these specific "mods" on their own computers, which can pose many technical challenges. With Minetest, we can simply add the mods on our end.
Additionally, Minetest is a free program, which makes it far more inclusive to families!
